Polyphenols are compounds that are naturally found in many plant-based foods. These antioxidants offer a variety of health benefits. Dr. Flam’s Phytropix contains nine different polyphenols, one of which is a flavonoid called EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate).

EGCG is the main compound in green tea. The health benefits of green tea are legendary. It has been used by ancient healers for thousands of years to cure all kinds of ills. In many places around the world, green tea is a more acceptable alternative to medicine when it comes to fighting many diseases. Unfortunately, the Western diet does not include much green tea. So, most people in the U.S. don’t get the benefits of EGCG.

EGCG is the most powerful catechin found in green tea. Scientific data backs up the health benefits of EGCG. The compound has been found to play a role in fat loss, cardiovascular health, and brain functioning.

Here are some more of the benefits of EGCG.

Aids Weight Loss

There is some evidence that EGCG supplementation in the diet may help burn fat. In one particular study, participants who took an EGCG supplement reduced body fat by more than 1.6 percent. They also had a 33 percent increase in fat oxidation rates compared to those who took a placebo. It is thought that EGCG helps improve fat oxidation or burning. It also inhibits fat cell development and increases the excretion of fat. Other studies have found a positive effect on metabolism, as well,1  in fact, one study showed fat loss at as much as 12 grams per day.5

Reverses Type 2 Diabetes

EGCG also shows promise against diabetes. One study found that it was as effective as the drug Avandia at fighting moderate type 2 diabetes. This is good news for anyone looking for a safer alternative to traditional diabetes medications.2 In addition to Type 2 diabetes, EGCG has also been helpful in fighting gestational diabetes, which is diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. In one study, women taking EGCG had significantly lower levels of fasting glucose compared to control subjects.3

Fights Cancer Cells

Polyphenols help shut down the production and spread of cancer cells. EGCG is the most beneficial cancer-fighting polyphenol in green tea. It has been shown to lower the risk of both prostate and breast cancer. Research studies have found that this cancer-fighting polyphenol keeps cancer cells from dividing, which doesn’t allow cancer to spread. Additionally, it discourages the growth of blood vessels that supply blood to the tumor. This also helps reduce the growth of cancer. ECGC can also help chemotherapy drugs work better by modulating the cell response to therapy.4
